Through the Fog: Discovering Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy

You may not have heard of Grand Manan, New Brunswick, a small island in the middle of the Bay of Fundy, but it has been voted one of the “World’s 7 Best Small Islands,” and it is home to about 2,000 Canadians.

The ferry ride to the Island takes about an hour and a half from the shore of New Brunswick. If you are lucky, you might spot some dolphins or whales on your journey. And when you get off the ferry, you have arrived somewhere very beautiful, quiet, and remote.

It is a bird-lover’s paradise, one of the most beautiful spots in Canada, and a perfect place from which to discover whales, puffins, fishery history, dulse-harvesting, and the impacts of the highest tides in the world.

Retired Museum Curator Annemarie Hagan first visited Grand Manan in 1990 and has since returned many times; it certainly helps that a family member has a cottage there!

Join Annemarie as she explores the evolving history of the Island and its communities, the unique nature and geology, the mysteries, literary connections, and even shipwrecks dating back to the 1720s. It just might inspire you to put Grand Manan on your bucket list!
